Back Pain: When To See A Chiropractor

Chiropractors specialize in adjusting the spinal vertebrae and other joints for pain relief and the restoration of normal function in the joints, ligaments and muscles that support those vertebrae.

What you can expect

Your chiropractor will develop a unique treatment plan that is tailor-made for you, and it may include ultrasound, joint mobilization, therapeutic exercises, stimulation of the muscles and various muscle release techniques. In addition, this professional will recommend injury-prevention and rehabilitation strategies for you and is also prepared to provide nutritional counselling when that is required.

What you should know

Your spine protects the nervous system, which travels between its joints or vertebrae bearing message from the brain throughout your body. When the vertebrae feel stress and strain, that may exert pressure on the area where this occurs. This is the reason why the effects of some difficulties with the spine can be widespread, causing pain in your legs or arms.

Symptoms you should not ignore

If you are experiencing pain in your back and shoulders, it may be caused by an injury, including heavy lifting, poor posture, or restricted movements of the spinal joints. Also, if the rib muscles tighten or the rib joints' movement decreases, this can result in chest pain, and you may find it difficult to take a deep breath. However, with the right chiropractic treatment, your joints, muscles and ligaments can function properly once again.

If you are suffering from lower back pain, that can be caused by muscle strain, disc injuries, restricted movement of the pelvis or spinal joints, heavy lifting, or weakness in the muscles supporting your lower back. There are also times when problems in the lower back may cause numbness, tingling or pain in your feet or legs.

When chiropractic treatment is needed

If muscle pain and aching joints are preventing you from engaging in your normal daily activities, that is definitely the time to think about getting chiropractic care. Note that sports injuries, manual labour, accidents, household chores and the stress of everyday life can result in pain in your back or joints.

It may surprise you to know that, on an annual basis, approximately 4 million Canadians visit a chiropractor to be treated for problems that include the following: back or neck pain, whiplash, headache and arthritis. Others have sprains and strains caused by their daily activities, restricted movement in their back, neck shoulders or limbs, and some are suffering from sports- and work-related injuries.

Receiving c hiropractic treatment can provide the following benefits: -- better movement in your back, torso, shoulders and neck, -- relief from headache, neck and back pain, -- relief of backache related to pregnancy -- avoidance of joint and muscle injuries that are work-related, -- greater flexibility and improved posture -- improved athletic performance, -- correction of foot and gait difficulties, and -- enhanced athletic performance.

Whatever your symptoms may be, if they persist for several days, it is best to have a chiropractor diagnose your problem and recommend a treatment plan.
