About 50,000 people in the US lose their sight every year. Blindness usually starts with a simple eye problem that's taken for granted. Our eyes are of high importance. Without them, we can't perform everyday tasks well at all. It's time to pay attention to our eyes. Here are some handy tips to help you care for your eyes properly and ameliorate your vision:
Start with a healthy diet. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Blueberries and strawberries are made up of antioxidants that can decrease the risk of getting ARMD, which stands for "Age-Related Macular Degeneration". Leafy, green vegetables, like spinach, are made up of a pigment called "lutein". This helps stop cataracts from forming and ARMD from developing. You can also take food supplements that contain high levels of nutrients to ameliorate your eye health.
Exercise can also keep our eyes healthy and improve our vision. Here are some eye exercises that you can practice: "figures of eight", "palming" and "near and far focusing". These eye exercises only take 5 to 10 minutes per day to practice and you can do them anywhere.
Palming is done by resting your fingers on your forehead and your wrists on your cheeks, while cupping your palms around your eyes. The goal of this exercise is to rest your eyes by relieving stress around them.
"Figures of eight" is done by tracing an imaginary figure eight with our eyes. This is intended to increase the flexibility of the eyes.
The "near and far focusing" exercise can be done by alternately focusing your eyes on objects that are close up and far away from you. The purpose of doing this exercise is so that your eye muscles will strengthen.
Furthermore, you can keep your eyes healthy by blinking more, especially if you spend a good deal of time inside air conditioned rooms. Blinking keeps your eyes from drying out by deflecting direct airflow out from your eyes. Dry eyes can be the cause of corneal abrasions that may eventually lead to deteriorating vision, if not seen to right away.
When working on computers for extended periods of time, try to adjust the computer screen 24 inches away from you, at an angle of 10-20 degrees. Staring at computer screens for hours at a time can severely strain your eyes, debilitate your eye muscles and result in blurred vision. Therefore, be sure to take several short breaks throughout your work day to rest your eyes.
Your eyes are of the utmost importance to your health. Thus, taking good care of them is a must. "Prevention is better than a cure", as they say. We must become aware of factors that can bring about eye problems so we can evade them. Please note that we need to consider any and all eye problems very seriously and address them as soon as we become aware of them.
